Can someone please GIMME BACK THIS NIGHT? I arrived at Slake on Thursday night with soaring expectations to see the techno guru Brodinski and female music prodigy turned DJ LOUISAHHH!!! in action, but I still managed to have my mind blown. The blend of tech, house, electro, deep bass, minimal, and rap was unlike anything I had ever heard, but another big part of the experience was the atmosphere. I consider myself a Webster vet but this was my first time at Slake and I had no idea what was in store within the three floors of “mystery, music, and debauchery.” You enter Slake from an unimposing door on the street and then descend into a dark, hot maze filled with music. The bass uniformly blares throughout all three floors, which is a nice touch versus Webster’s variously themed floors. It’s easy to get lost trying to navigate the crisscrossing staircases and hallways. As I made my way to the main floor, there was a soft, voyeuristic red light bouncing off of the hallways and the bar. You can spy human-sized cages and a spooky chandelier as you descend. They hit the “mystery” aspect right on the head, and it gave me the chills with Halloween being right around the corner. I felt like I had discovered a secret underground gathering of those who were privy to where good music ruled the night.
LOUISAHHH!!!’s beauty is only matched by her talent behind the decks and the mic. Her sound is deep and her voice is soulful and haunting. A perfect example is her vocals on Craig Williams’ track “Rawhide.”
Highlights of her set included “In My Veins,” “Itty Bitty Cunty (B. Ames Remix),” and the collaboration with Brodinski that made it all happen, “Let The Beat Control Your Body.”
From a fateful meeting with Brodinski to releasing her first solo EP under Bromance Records, LOUISAHHH!!!’s battle cry will soon be heard far and wide.
The mastermind, Brodinski, needs little introduction. His unique sound is known throughout the techno landscape. I stood mesmerized behind the decks watching him mix, listen, think, smoke, and craft an effortlessly incredible set. Oh and sometimes I remembered to take pictures of him doing this too. He truly had the energy of the crowd in the palm of his hand. Brodinski is a tastemaker’s tastemaker. Just ask Diplo and Jillionaire of Major Lazer, Baauer, Dave 1 of Chromeo, A-Trak, and Drop The Lime who were all in attendance to support their bro from Paris.
Highlights included Gesaffelstein’s “Control Movement,” Kanye West’s “Send It Up” (which both Brodinski and Gesaffelstein helped produce) and a masterful mix between the club mix and original version of “Gimme Back The Night” with Theophilus London. I enjoyed Brodinski’s consisent use of the white noise effect; it gave a uniformity to his eclectic set. These two artists really love music and it shows every time they take the stage. Come back soon Brodinski and LOUISAHHH!!!
